The Great List Building Hoax

Why is that when you buy a list building product all you get (at best) is a variation of the following?

  1. Get a website (domain and hosting)
  2. Get a free gift to give away (ebook, audio, video, email newsletter)
  3. Get an autoresponder account like AWeber
  4. Make a squeeze page (short html page) with a pitch for your free gift
  5. Add your Autoresponder form to the squeeze page
  6. Add follow up emails to your Autoresponder
  7. Send traffic to your squeeze page
  8. Be good to your list… (teach them, offer them quality stuff.. both for free and paid stuff..)

The salespage will sprinkle in claims of $1 per month per subscriber with an automatic push button solution and instantly you fall into the trap of assuming that the person you bought this course from is trustworthy and knows what they are talking about.

My biggest gripe with this sort of course is that they never explain the concept of personal branding, and automatically assume that you want to target the “Make Money Online” niche. You stand a much better chance of success if you build a list based on something you know and have a passion for, and in a lot of cases applying listbuilding to a different niche will be the most profitable for you.

The trouble is that this won’t be most profitable for the owner of the report, hence it’s barely ever mentioned.

I’ve been looking at “listbuilders” asking for reviews of their squeezepages over at the warrior forum and it saddens me that these people have taken action and have gone backwards by following the advice given above. If someone tells you that any old PLR report and optimizepress is how you create a squeezepage followed up with “Buy Solo Adverts” it’s time to put your fingers in your ears and add that person to the ignore list.

But Why Are PLR reports & Solo Adverts Bad?

To create a relationship with subscribers you need to use the one thing you have that makes you different from everyone else – your own personality. I’ve read many reports which are 25 pages of bland writing, full of filler, spelling and grammar mistakes that want you to get out the digital red pen. A bad first impression like this won’t be building the kind of relationship that leads to them buying something from you.

If you’re lucky the chapter outline in a PLR report may be good enough that you can convert it into something you would be proud to put your name against. Speaking of which you will look much more professional if you buy an ecover and get your name on the front with a great title. Here’s the link to the fiverr seller who made the cover for my Headline Report.

http://fiverr.com/qsera/design-in-less-than-24-hours-3d-ebook-covers

So with a good quality report and some personal branding in place how do we get traffic to the page?

Solo Adverts used to be the answer, but sadly this market place has gone the way of investment banking where greed and corruption have ruined it. The prices I see of a hundred plus dollars for 200 clicks makes my eyes water, and then if you join a sellers list to test out the quality you find that you get bombarded with multiple offers everyday which are totally random based upon who was daft enough to purchase that day.

One day the seller will be advertising a SEO report, the next day it’s Social Media, followed by a blind squeezepage with a rented mansion and ferarri on the drive. How can this sort of traffic ever be worth $1 a click!

If you’re targeting a specific niche where you have a passion then you will already know the forums and popular blogs in the niche, so buy advertising on the sites that you visit and get a list of people who have the same passion and views as yourself. That last sentance is your golden nugget for today, write it down on your whiteboard.

Reality Check Over

I really hope that you’ve managed to steer clear of the “churn & burn” brigade who are unwittingly trying to teach you listbuilding when all they have is the 8 points above but want to sell you a product without actually knowing enough to teach it properly.

Lazy Lazy “Marketers”

Fed Up With People Treating You Like A Cash Cow?

It was like being back in 2006 yesterday, a brilliant new WSO launched and here was my inbox around 10 am EST. Whilst this sort of immediate traffic spike is brilliant for the owners it’s really reminded me how many people treat me like a cash cow. I mean at least make the effort of putting some personalisation into the message.

Now I want to take some time to explain what Covert Video Press is, and to give you the key points from the 20 minute video that Soren has put together explaining it all.

The first key thing to note is that this I feel this product is aimed at people who doing niche marketing, so if you have a real passion for something away from marketing Covert Video Press is going to make you more money than people who are still chasing the push button riches.

Essentially the product is a wordpress theme that you install onto your blog, so if you don’t have a spare domain name or hosting account then this product is not for you. What it does is allow you to turn the blog into a site where you just take the best content on all of the major video sites, and allows you to become a filter that blocks out the crap.

Sure 24 hours of video is uploaded to youtube every minute, but 23 hours and 59 minutes is useless drivel.

Here’s the example site created by Soren – http://thebeautifulgame.me

This site has filtered down to only showing videos relating to football, or soccer if you prefer. You can tell within seconds of arriving that all of the videos are going to be related to this topic, which is very important if you want traffic from the mighty Google. When people arrive at your site and leave in under a minute it gives then a clue that your content is crap and they shouldn’t be showing you in their results.

Once you’ve found a video that will keep visitors on your site it’s super simple to get the video in place, all you do is put the embed url into the theme and it does everything else. It’s also not an accident that the all important share buttons are in the same place as youtube, this will increase your viral co-efficient as visitors will be sending their friends to your site.

I’m not into Niche Sites, Can I Still Make Money?

Like the previous products from IMWealthBuilders this product comes with lots of things that will allow you to buy and still make money even if you hate niche sites.

The theme comes with a multi-site and the all important developer license. This means that you can set up a site and sell it with the theme still installed. I imagine that if you check out Flippa or other sites you will see that even although this has only been open for 1 day some clever people are already doing this.

I would estimate that sites will be going for at least $97, which will be an awesome return on the current price of $10.24 and during the time it has taken me to write this post it has gone up by $0.02 which means 20 people have bought it during this time – talk about a hot product!

Anyway I hope that this post has at least helped educate you on the product, and if you do buy through my affiliate link then I really want to let you know it’s much appreciated.

The TimTech School Of Marketing

So in this post I want to talk about how a company formed recently has taken the world of Traffic Exchanges by storm and generated a membership called ClickTrackProfit that now has over 30,000 members.

Lesson #1 No Hard Selling

If someone knocks on your front door or calls your house phone and the first thing they do is start trying to sell you something, what do you do? I tell them to shove off (or something ruder if I’m in a bad mood), so why is that so many people online think that it’s cool to start selling on first contact?

Sure the guys at TimTech do try to sell you upgrades, but it’s always done via video, with an introduction, and then a here’s why it would be cool if you purchased this from us today…

Also with the amount of traffic they generate / buy across the Traffic Exchange network they could build crazy downlines in anyone of the scam sites that constantly plague this industry promising push button wealth for a single investment. They stand tall and regularly tell people at the daily TELive (4 pm EST) to promote yourself first and opportunities second.

In fact whilst I was typing this post I was distracted by this post from Jon Olson, read the comments section and you will learn an important lesson – Why I don’t care about building Downlines

Lesson #2 Basic Branding & Networking

So from the first lesson you know it’s time to get personal and start promoting yourself first.

The perfect way to do this to use AdKreator, which funny enough is also a TimTech company :-)

Here’s 3 different pages I’ve created

Chalkboard squeezepage for Headline Report

Leadership splash page

I love CTP Blog Post (may change the link to this new post now)

Notice how in each of these I make sure I’m branding myself as an expert in areas such as Headline Writing, Leadership, and trying to attract other members of ClickTrackProfit to this blog. If you spend more than 10 minutes surfing you will constantly see hundreds of people promoting ClickTrackProfit, and subtly I’m branding myself and by having my own badge means that I can get some of these 30,000 members onto my mailing list.

Doing this sort of self branding first is something that will benefit you long term vs being given a load of affiliate links and told to drive traffic to these links. Should a programme your promoting go bust or stop working then you’re left with nothing, and all the hard work you put into traffic generation is generating leads and sales for someone else.

Next time you see someone advertising themselves take a minute to write down their name, and if you see the same person on multiple occassions in the next week find a way to get in touch, and talk about the great job they’re doing branding themselves.

This first contact and longer term friendship based on a common interest could lead to all sort of great things happening. For example I bet Patrick Griffin didn’t think he would publish a book with Justin Ledvina when he first joined ClickTrackProfit!

Lesson #3 Stay In The Game

This is the exact opposite of all the salesapges that are aimed at pulling on your emotions and getting you to part with your credit card details and earning bucketloads of cash by using automated software developed by a russian programmer who will make your content #1 in google before you’ve even posted it.

At ClickTrackProfit you will learn a concept called +1. Basically you pick a sensible target and use it to create slow but steady growth in your business. In the world of Internet Marketing you have certain overheads that you will need to pay each month, these are called evergreen products. For example I get paid by Aweber each month as I recommend it to you the readers of my blog and put it in multiple downline builders and my viral reports.

Like all good business owners you’re first objective is to break even, and then work on the growth using the +1 strategy. So if I set myself a target of 30 new subscribers each month, and achieve it, the next target is 60 per month, then 90 per month, and so on.

If you don’t have your own blog / product / service then concentrate on evergreen products and crack the break even phase so that when you do move onto the next phase you have a good network of people to support you in the next stage and help you launch your own little bit of the internet.

Lesson #4 Don’t Accept The Status Quo

This means that you need to stand out from the crowd. I think that almost all of TimTech read business books from the top thinkers in the world of business, and one of the most common theme’s is the Purple Cow concept from Seth Godin.

When advertising do something unique and different. The best way of being unique is video, in this world of high speed internet and mobile technology you can get your message across, and if you give that message with the logo of the company you’re promoting on your forehead it will definately get attention.

*golden nugget” I should have done this for the login lesson I recorded for ClickTrackProfit.

If you do see real results and have something you think is worth sharing with the entire membership and you’ve taken the time to network at TELive and in the chat functions then you stand a good chance of being able to share your ideas and give yet more social proof that the training inside ClickTrackProfit will work if you spend the time to take action on it. Like everything else if you ignore it and do nothing then you will get the result of nothing squared which is nothing!

Lesson #5 Have Fun And Sell Things You Enjoy

Everyone has the ability inside them to create and sell information over the internet.

I know lots about safelists and listbuilding, and doing geeky things such as installing membership scripts, and I can install an aweber form on your website so quickly I can do it for just $5!

Don’t get hung up on selling internet marketing products, most of them are rehashed crap. The real power of the internet is that it gives you the chance to become a superstar just by doing the things you love. Many of the lessons within ClickTrackProfit all have this underlying message, do the things you enjoy, help others, and then find people who will pay to learn from you. “Crush It” by Gary Vaynerchuck will give you the inspiration to get started blogging and start sharing your ideas.

Create quality content and then find a way to monetize it, if you try to create content to make money it will generally backfire and read like you’re selling rather than sharing.

Warning: Without Hard Work You Will Fail With Internet Marketing

As the title of this post says I’ve got a difficult message to give you.

It shouldn’t be a surprise, but internet marketing is a business, if you decided to set up an offline business and spent all your time just sitting waiting for customers to find you then how long before you would go out of business? I’ve been in clothes shops where the sales assistant is too busy texting on their mobile rather than asking me if I need any help? Guess what, next time I go past this shop it has gone bust!

Don’t think that because an online business has a low initial cost and almost no overheads that it’s any easier. You need to overcome multiple failures and learn from your mistakes to become successful.

Now the hard work doesn’t have to be 16 hour days, but it need’s to be the correct action at the correct time. For example if you buy products / services then make sure you take action. I’ve lost count of the unused products on my hard drive or the pile of DVD’s and stupidly over priced (4 figures) homestudy courses in my garage.

So I’m pleased to tell you that I’ve taken massive action and set up 2 new gigs on fiverr. Putting an information product in front of people looking to spend $5 is the same as getting a mobile kebab van outside a busy pub at closing time.

Let me know what you think of my gig?
==> http://fiverr.com/7-guaranteed-ways-to-generate-traffic-to-your-squeeze-page

Don’t use lack of technical knowledge as an excuse. You can set up a gig like this without the need for hosting, your own domain, or any sort of merchant account. Heck, you can even join the work hard gang and sell advertising space on your forehead for $5!

Remember that you just need to get over the first hurdle and start selling information products. If someone is trying to sell you an easy push button solution then just walk away and invest your time and money in learning business skills.

Lastly it’s important to remember that you need to set yourself some sensible goals of what you want to achieve and break them down into achievable targets. If you want to earn $1k per month then learn how to make $30 in a day.

Don’t jump in an expect immediate results, imagine being in front of the bank manager and thinking would they lend me money if I was an offline business? The reason offline business owners make so much money is they’re prepared to take the high risks required, and put plans in place to keep that business running smoothly.

Apologies for the hard word’s, but someone needs to make you look in the mirror every now and again.

Do You Make These 7 Newbie Mistakes With Your Internet Marketing?

So way back in 2003 I started in my quest to become an internet marketer, yet it wasn’t until 2005 that I was actually able to generate a good monthly profit. This post will help to explain some of the mistakes I made (and some that I am still making) so that you can push forward and start to see success.

Don’t Call Yourself A Newbie

This really is massive, if you call yourself a newbie then you’re prime pickings for the scumbags who rely on people like you who openly admit they know nothing about internet marketing. Also when it comes to doing anything you automatically assume that it will fail due to you being a newbie.

A small change in mindset will make you an intermediate marketer who is learning the skills required to be successful vs a newbie who’s looking for push button solutions.

Stop Being A Sponge

Have a look at the information products you’ve bought in the last 6 months, how many of them have you taken action on? This builds on the newbie mindset, if you bought a product and haven’t taken action then all you’ve done is waste your time and effort. This is similar to the “magic bullet syndrome” or “slot machine marketing” where it’s easier to buy another course than admit to yourself that you failed with the previous one.

Rather than just drawing in the information like a sponge decide to dry out and take action on existing knowledge rather than buying into the next fad.

Start Branding Yourself

The one thing that makes you different from every other affiliate marketer is your personality. People do business with people that they like, know, and trust. When you look at all the super affiliates who are able to make hundreds of sales they all have one thing in common – a connection with the people who buy the products they recommend.

Now to do this you will need to have your own website, if you haven’t done so already register yourname.com or yourbusiness.com immediately. Then get some basic hosting from hostgator and install wordpress in < 5 minutes using fantastico. Immediately you now have some online real estate that you can call your own.

Even better create a free report on the niche that you’re passionate about and now you can start listbuilding and creating the relationships that will lead directly to more affiliate commissions. The other massive benefit of a blog is that it gives you somewhere central to send all your social media traffic to and show visitors how to interact with you.

DUSAP – Don’t Use Standard Affiliate Pages

This is a phrase that I picked up via the users of sweeva – basically it builds on the previous point. Should you wish to promote any sort of affiliate offer you should create a unique page that tells people why you’re promoting “product A” and what the benefits will be. This is really powerful branding for you, and if the owner of the site sees that you’re prepared to put time and effort into your marketing this will only help you in the future.

Now this won’t happen overnight and you will need to keep at it, just remember that if you’re also networking with the people who are also branding themselves that you can drag each other up to achieve success – the individual engine do nothing until you put them together.

Start Building Your Own List

This builds on the previous 2 points. When you are advertising send all of your traffic to pages that you have control over. Once you have a list / social media followers you are able to tell them directly of a new offer via an email broadcast.

If you’ve got branding sorted you should now have a free report so set up a squeeze page and start looking for adswap partners. Think about the people you’ve seen doing similar things to yourself, see if you place links on each others blogs or download pages.

You can also start looking into multiple traffic generation tactics, eg forum marketing, banner advertising, facebook adverts, youtube videos, articles, guest blogging, and many many more methods.

Treat Your Website Like A Business

Realise that having an online business is the same as having an offline business. Just because you’re selling information and don’t have the same overheads it’s still the same concepts. In order for things to happen you have to put in hard work and invest money into the project. If you sit back and do nothing then nothing will happen.

Decide how much time and money you are prepared to put into your business to make it a success. If you can’t find the time then perhaps you’ve chosen the wrong niche, if you can’t get passionate about your business then it’s time to go find a job. Bit of a tough love message, but some people just aren’t suited to being their own boss.

Stop Doing Everything Yourself

This is something that I’m very guilty of doing. I should really be outsourcing most of my traffic generation to a virtual assisstant, but trusting someone else to do this is something that I find very difficult.

The only thing I’ve really learned how to outsource successfully is graphic design. When I read about all the people I want to be like you get to realise that they all have staff doing the mundane jobs. The same is true when I look at all of the senior managers, they don’t arrange their own meetings, book travel, or fill in expenses. The company pays for them to have a secretary.

I think my aim for 2012 is start including a virtual assistant in my monthly expenses, and treat the expense in the same way that I treat autoresponder and hosting costs – an essential overhead of my online business.

The 7 things that will stop you being a newbie

Take action on the information you already know. Make sure that you own a little corner of the internet and use it to sell yourself first, and when people stop and listen to you tell them about products and services that will earn you commissions. Write a 500 word article on a topic your passionate about, give an ecover for it, and start giving it away to build your list. Lastly learn to treat the internet like a business and spend money to make money.
